Starting back to school shopping!

That's right now that the 4th of July is over the stores are slowly starting to get their back to school sections filled and ready to go. While I generally have been doing the older kid back to shopping the last few years, this will be the first year having to do the younger crowd as well as the older crowd thing. Once I had the girls list of interests for this year we got a list started (I put them in categories so I have an idea of where things are going) Then it's time to look at what they need for each area (and then I double it at the very least!).

This year I get to do some of the fun stuff again for my youngest. Some places to check for fun stuff: Target (in the dollar bins), IKEA, dollar tree, Michaels Arts and Crafts, and Joanns Fabric (for Michaels and Joanns make sure you ask for your educator discount).

I stopped by and they had some great stuff in the dollar bins for the kindergarten and under ages. These were in the $1 bins!

I also found some cool stuff for decorations as well...


After Target I headed to IKEA..I got some of their 4.99 paper rolls which we LOVE. We get 3 each year (at least) We use them under our art and craft area, we use them on the easels instead of the chalk boards and then we use them for stuff through out the year. I picked up this for Dominic so he would have something fun to do (I figure he will put them at one end of our hall way and go for it!
I noticed today that our local Walmart is getting all their school supplies out and ready to go! So not much longer until we go down to get the nitty gritty stuff (spiral notebooks, pencils, paper, etc). I always say buy at least 3x what you think you will need (because you'll be surprised how much more you'll use homeschooling and I hate paying full price for anything later on in the year!).
Starting to get all excited for a new year here!

After we got home from our camping trip, we had Oma and Opa come to visit for a couple of weeks. The kids always love seeing them and not a LOT of school got done..because..well, life happens. We started slowly with a few things here and there but didn't hit our full schedule until the end of September/First full week of October. Most of our new stuff arrived for the year. So it was fun looking thru everything! For our social studies/geography/culture studies the kids picked out a few different books. We are still working on some of our books from last year so this was just rounding out a few areas. Then of course they have the "country club" that meets every other week and we have each "student" and/or their family present a different country (they get to choose) and generally have a small talk about the country, do a project, get to taste some yummy food from each country and then the kids go out and play for 20 minutes or so afterwards. getting organized, slowly but surely

Starting to get organized for the coming school year. I just got an email that the student planners for the kids are now available at franklin covey, so those will be ordered soon. They have 3 different levels for the kids. An elementary, a middle school and a high school planner. the older selections being more detailed while the younger ones are getting them prepared and used to keeping track of their work, etc. We used them last year with the kids (although I did drop the ball later in the year when I got crazy busy), so I need to make sure we keep up on them for the school year. It really helped my ADHD/dyslexic kiddo to see what was on her schedule each day/week/month and keep track of how she was doing on things so she could visibly see an improvement in area's like reading where she struggles. And that went fast!!

Last time we posted it was early February and I couldn't believe it! and Now here we are Almost done with March!! In the last few weeks we've been hiking, went camping in a yurt, found a bucket full of obsidian, checked out some lava rock, played in the snow, and signed up to change charter schools for next year...so yes it's been busy! big waterfall is from our hike at Silver falls, Snow pictures are from our camping trip to Bend, Oregon. Our first time staying in a yurt and during winter no less! The website says sleeps 8 but we barely slept 7! We visited Glass Butte, Oregon and picked up a bunch of obsidian, saw fresh signs of a bear, walked in the old mill district of Bend, and headed home. 4 days and 3 nights in Bend with friends and had a ball.
