fun group idea

It's always nice to hear about things that other people do that you might be able to incorporate into your schooling as well. One of the things we've done and really have a lot of fun with is a group we started for local homeschoolers. We meet up every couple of weeks and do a fun "country club" where we get to learn about different countries. Each child gets to pick a country to present to the group (if the child is young or shy the parent gets to help out). Each meeting the kids talk about the country, have an activity and/or a food to try from that country. The kids have a lot of fun with it, and learn a lot. So far they have learned to write their names in Chinese, painted fish for France's "fish day", celebrated Dutch "Kings Day", learned about Israel  and then there is pinata day!


So the floor got cleared and set up for the activity...



The kids were a bit "ick, this is messy!" (I used to love this stuff, so I'm blaming the husband for this issue) but they had a great time and of course the family giving the presentation had made one earlier and it was all ready for the kids to whack!





It's been a great experience so far!

Back to school, sort of.

After we got home from our camping trip, we had Oma and Opa come to visit for a couple of weeks. The kids always love seeing them and not a LOT of school got done..because..well, life happens. We started slowly with a few things here and there but didn't hit our full schedule until the end of September/First full week of October. Most of our new stuff arrived for the year. So it was fun looking thru everything! For our social studies/geography/culture studies the kids picked out a few different books. We are still working on some of our books from last year so this was just rounding out a few areas. Then of course they have the "country club" that meets every other week and we have each "student" and/or their family present a different country (they get to choose) and generally have a small talk about the country, do a project, get to taste some yummy food from each country and then the kids go out and play for 20 minutes or so afterwards. getting organized, slowly but surely

Starting to get organized for the coming school year. I just got an email that the student planners for the kids are now available at franklin covey, so those will be ordered soon. They have 3 different levels for the kids. An elementary, a middle school and a high school planner. the older selections being more detailed while the younger ones are getting them prepared and used to keeping track of their work, etc. We used them last year with the kids (although I did drop the ball later in the year when I got crazy busy), so I need to make sure we keep up on them for the school year. It really helped my ADHD/dyslexic kiddo to see what was on her schedule each day/week/month and keep track of how she was doing on things so she could visibly see an improvement in area's like reading where she struggles. And that went fast!!

Last time we posted it was early February and I couldn't believe it! and Now here we are Almost done with March!! In the last few weeks we've been hiking, went camping in a yurt, found a bucket full of obsidian, checked out some lava rock, played in the snow, and signed up to change charter schools for next year...so yes it's been busy! big waterfall is from our hike at Silver falls, Snow pictures are from our camping trip to Bend, Oregon. Our first time staying in a yurt and during winter no less! The website says sleeps 8 but we barely slept 7! We visited Glass Butte, Oregon and picked up a bunch of obsidian, saw fresh signs of a bear, walked in the old mill district of Bend, and headed home. 4 days and 3 nights in Bend with friends and had a ball.
